From Curiosity to Confidence: Introducing STEM Fundamentals
EqualXS Foundation | Summer 2026 | Spark → Launchpad
During Summer 2026, EqualXS Foundation ran a learning cohort for girls from rural communities in Africa, introducing them to STEM fundamentals through interactive activities, practical learning, and opportunities for self-expression.
The cohort followed the EqualXS approach of creating safe, non-judgmental spaces where every participant could ask questions, share ideas, explore new concepts, and practise new skills without fear of getting things wrong.
Across the workshops, the girls explored how science connects to everyday life, from nutrition, hydration, sleep, health, and hygiene to recognising their personal strengths, setting goals, and building practical life skills. Activities encouraged them to move beyond simply learning concepts and begin applying them through hands-on experiences.
The most meaningful change was seeing confidence develop over time. From the first workshop to the final session, the girls had more opportunities to express themselves, participate, try unfamiliar activities, and recognise what they were capable of doing. Each session built on the previous one, giving them space to learn at their own pace and grow through practice.
This is at the heart of the EqualXS methodology: confidence is not something we simply tell young people they have. It develops when they feel safe enough to participate, are given room to make mistakes, and have repeated opportunities to try again.
Seeing this progress across the cohort is what gives us the energy and motivation to continue this mission. Every opportunity to learn, practise, and be heard can help a young person see new possibilities for herself.
Thank you to Tvisha Kapur for helping make these sessions engaging, relatable, and practical.
Potential is universal. Pathways to opportunity are not.
